Larto Lake is part of the large natural Saline-Larto backwater complex in east-central Louisiana. The system includes Larto Lake, Saline Lake, Shad Lake and numerous interconnecting bayous and smaller lakes, with regular backwater influence from the Red, Black and Little rivers. Water levels, turbidity and aquatic vegetation can change substantially with flooding, making Larto a dynamic Louisiana fishery. Crappie and largemouth bass are major sportfish, with catfish and sunfish adding additional opportunities.

Best Areas to Fish
Crappie anglers can target bayou channels, brush, cypress cover and artificial reef sites. Bass anglers should work woody cover, vegetation when present, bayou mouths and current-influenced transitions. LDWF has established numerous artificial reefs throughout the complex, including Fools Bayou and other nearby locations.
Best for Beginners
For crappie, start with small jigs or minnows around visible cover, channel edges and known reef locations. For bass, try spinnerbaits, soft plastics and moving baits around cypress trees, bayou mouths and vegetation edges. Because the complex is large and interconnected, mark your launch and route before exploring unfamiliar bayous.
Visitor Tips
Larto is part of a much larger interconnected backwater system rather than an isolated lake. Water levels can alter routes, clarity and fish location. Check current weather, river conditions and local access reports, and consider using LDWF reef coordinates to shorten the search for productive structure.

Public AccessPublic and commercial access points serve Larto Lake and the surrounding complex. Youngblood Landing is a well-known Larto access point referenced by LDWF. Access and navigability can change with water level, flooding and vegetation, so verify current conditions before travel.

The Larto area has rural camping, cabins and fishing-oriented lodging around the lake and complex. Facilities are not uniform, so verify the exact property and current access before booking or traveling.
Fishing License Information
A Louisiana fishing license is required when applicable. Regulations on the Saline-Larto Complex can change. In March 2026 the Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries Commission adopted a Notice of Intent proposing modified crappie and black bass limits, so anglers should check current LDWF regulations rather than rely on an older printed limit.
