Davy Hite Conquers the Delta Heat
New Orleans hosted a punishing summer Classic, and Davy Hite turned three hot days on the Louisiana Delta into one of the most commanding wins of the era.
How the 1999 Louisiana Classic unfolded
The 1999 Bassmaster Classic returned to the Louisiana Delta in late July, putting the field into extreme summer conditions. Bassmaster records the first and final competition days at 96 degrees — the hottest days in Classic history at the time.
Hite separated himself from the field with a three-day total of 55 pounds, 10 ounces. Runner-up Denny Brauer finished at 45-11, giving Hite a margin of nearly ten pounds in bass fishing’s biggest championship.
The victory also produced the event’s big bass for Hite at 5 pounds, 10 ounces. His winning total stood as an important modern Classic benchmark and was still being referenced when later five-fish-limit records were broken.
A Louisiana moment that stayed in Bassmaster history
Louisiana’s heat became part of the story. This Classic showed how demanding the Delta can be when long runs, summer temperatures and fish care all matter as much as finding bass.
