Shad Lake is one of the principal lakes in the Saline-Larto Complex, a natural east-central Louisiana backwater system that also includes Larto Lake, Saline Lake and numerous interconnected bayous and smaller lakes. The larger complex covers about 8,200 acres and receives backwater flooding from the Red, Black and Little rivers. Shad Lake is especially characterized by shallow water, cypress habitat and aquatic vegetation, so fishing conditions can change considerably with water level, clarity and plant growth.

Best Areas to Fish
Fish cypress edges, openings in aquatic vegetation, flooded timber, channel transitions and bayou connections. Crappie often relate to woody cover and deeper channel structure, while largemouth bass can use vegetation edges, cypress, current seams and shallow-to-deep transitions.
Best for Beginners
Start near known access and work visible cypress and vegetation edges. Small jigs and minnows are dependable crappie choices. For bass, try soft plastics, spinnerbaits and compact moving baits around openings and woody cover. Avoid running unfamiliar shallow water at speed.
