Toledo Bend Reservoir stretches along the Louisiana-Texas border on the Sabine River and is one of the South's largest man-made reservoirs. It is best known for its largemouth bass fishery, but crappie, catfish, white bass, striped bass and abundant sunfish give anglers plenty of options throughout the year. Standing timber, creek channels, humps, flats and aquatic vegetation create a wide variety of fishing habitat.
B.A.S.S. tournament history at Toledo Bend reaches back to 1970. Bassmaster reported that the 2024 Elite was the 19th pro-level Bassmaster tournament held on the reservoir and the fifth Elite Series visit.
The first Bassmaster event at Toledo Bend began a tournament legacy that later included champions such as Larry Nixon, Roland Martin, Tommy Martin and Kevin VanDam.

Official Bassmaster Coverage →Bass anglers commonly target vegetation edges, flats, humps, creek channels, standing timber and flooded brush. Lower-lake water is often clearer, while the upper reservoir generally has less vegetation and more timber/brush-oriented habitat. Crappie concentrate around shallow vegetation during the spring spawn and around deeper brush and creek channels during other seasons. Catfish are found throughout the reservoir.
Toledo Bend is enormous, so pick one section of the reservoir rather than trying to cover the whole lake. A first-time visitor can launch from a developed park or marina, fish nearby coves and creek-channel structure, and use a current map or GPS because submerged timber and long distances can make navigation challenging.
Toledo Bend is a Louisiana-Texas boundary water. Properly licensed Louisiana or Texas residents, and anglers holding valid nonresident licenses from either state, may fish the common boundary waters under the reciprocal arrangement. Some harvest rules are shared across the reservoir while rules for certain species can differ, so verify current Louisiana and Texas regulations before fishing.
North Toledo Bend State Park near Zwolle is a major Louisiana-side public access point with a double-ramp launch, large parking lot and fish-cleaning station. Many additional Louisiana-side marinas, parks and commercial ramps are located from the upper lake to the dam; choose a launch close to your intended fishing area and verify current access before travel.
North Toledo Bend State Park offers camping and cabins, and many additional campgrounds, resorts and marinas operate around the reservoir. This makes Toledo Bend well suited to multi-day fishing trips.
A valid fishing license is required when applicable. Current Louisiana rules list a 14-inch minimum total length for largemouth bass on Toledo Bend, no minimum for spotted bass, and an eight-fish daily aggregate black-bass limit. Toledo Bend crappie have a 25-fish daily limit and up to 100 crappie may be possessed. White bass have a 25-fish daily limit. Catfish and other species also have Toledo Bend-specific rules. Regulations can change, so check the current LDWF rules before fishing.
