Court rulings described the historically named lake as a river system that seasonally overflows its banks, with Little River and surrounding backwaters shaping the basin. Anglers should expect conditions, shoreline access and navigable water to change substantially with season and river stage.

Best Areas to Fish
Look for channel edges, drains, slough mouths, flooded vegetation, woody cover and current seams connecting Little River, canals and backwaters. Fish location can shift dramatically as water enters or leaves the basin.
Best for Beginners
Start from a known public launch, save your route and avoid treating the broad basin like a fixed-pool lake. Focus on visible cover and moving-water connections, and check wind and water-level conditions before venturing far from the ramp.
Visitor Tips
Check current LDWF road and WMA notices before travel. Flooding periodically closes interior roads around Dewey W. Wills WMA, so access that worked on a previous trip may not be available today.

Four primitive camping areas are maintained on Dewey W. Wills WMA. These are WMA-style camps rather than developed resort campgrounds.
