Choose Little River for a quieter river-fishing experience with cypress-lined backwaters, oxbow lakes, kayak-friendly scenery, public boat access and primitive camping.
Little River winds through central Louisiana from the Dugdemona River and Castor Creek system toward Catahoula Lake. Around Little River WMA, anglers fish the main river, oxbow lakes, sloughs and flooded bottomland habitat. LDWF manages the WMA with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and notes good fishing on the river and within its oxbow lakes.
Local Knowledge
Best Areas to Fish
Work outside bends, current breaks, woody cover, cypress edges, creek mouths and entrances to oxbow lakes. During changing water levels, pay close attention to current seams and connections between the river and backwaters.
Best for Beginners
Start near a known landing and learn a short stretch before exploring farther. Fish visible wood and current breaks with compact lures or live bait, and use electronics to identify deeper bends and holes. Save your launch location before entering oxbows.
Visitor Tips
Check Little River stage, recent rainfall and WMA road conditions before leaving home. LDWF notes that improved roads are generally all-weather unless the area is flooded.
Fishing Access and Amenities
Public AccessYes. LDWF lists a concrete boat ramp providing access to Little River. Parish roads from U.S. Highway 165 reach the WMA, though flooding can affect interior access.
Bank FishingLimited compared with boat fishing. Try developed access and landing areas where legal and safe; much of the river and oxbow habitat is best reached by boat or paddle craft.
Boat AccessYes — a concrete boat ramp serves Little River WMA. The current WMA map also identifies Lonnies Landing and Jacks Landing in the Walker Ferry Road area.
Kayak AccessVery good when river stage, current and weather are suitable. The cypress-lined river and oxbows are attractive paddle-fishing water, but high water and current require caution.

Two primitive camping areas are available on Little River WMA; one may close during high-water conditions. Check current WMA camping requirements before an overnight trip.
Fishing License Information
